Frequently Asked Questions from Adult Learners

hands

Am I too old to learn?

Of course not! About 50 - 60% of our students are retirees with many in their 70's and 80's.

Should I take private lessons, or should I join a group?

OMS offers group instruction in piano and voice. It is an individual decision which way you will go. For good advice, check with the director or the instructor.

Do I come every week?

Groups meet weekly, but private instruction would allow you more flexibility in your studies. Some intermediate and advanced adult students choose to take lessons every other week. If this is your preference, most teachers will ask you to schedule your lessons at the beginning or end of the day and to keep scheduling options flexible.

What instruments do you offer?

OMS offers Piano (private/class), Voice (private/class), Violin, Viola, and Flute.

Why doesn't OMS offer every instrument?

Olympic Music School was built on a philosophy of excellence. All of our teachers are experienced performers and teachers and specialize in their instruments. We are committed to hiring only teachers who are highly qualified. Nearly all of our teachers have music degrees from accredited universities and/or extraordinary professional performing careers. As we encounter teacher/performers with these qualities, we will expand our program.

So, is Olympic Music School too stuffy and serious for me?

Although we take our teaching seriously, we are easy to work with and are dedicated to, and enjoy, working with students of all abilities. We want music to enrich your life, not add stress!

Do I need to own an instrument in order to take lessons?

At minimum, you should have access to an instrument. OMS has a few digital keyboards for short-term rent and Strait Music handles other instrument rentals. Practice time is essential for progress.

I travel a lot. Is the school understanding of a retiree with an unpredictable schedule?

All teachers at the school try to accommodate special scheduling needs.

Do I have to play in recitals?

Adult students are offered opportunities to perform for small groups, but are not compelled to do so.

Can I visit the school?

Absolutely! Call or write to make an appointment with the director or with a specific teacher.
